Description
The Church of St John is a Grade II* listed building located in Barford St John, dating from the 12th, 13th, and 15th centuries, with restoration carried out in the 1860s by G.E. Street. It is constructed from regularly coursed ironstone rubble and features a Stonesfield slate roof. The church comprises a nave, chancel, and south porch.
The chancel includes a three-light Perpendicular east window, a single lancet window to the north, a traceried window with a square head, a pointed arched doorway with a plank door, and a two-light lancet window with limestone hood moulds to the south. The nave has two two-light Perpendicular windows with square hood moulds and a small four-centred arched doorway to the north. To the south, there are two two-light Decorated windows with some renewed stonework. The south doorway is Romanesque, featuring zigzag decoration and jamb shafts with volute capitals, along with a plank door. The south porch, described as an eccentric addition by Pevsner, has an octagonal tower with a pyramidal roof and foliated circles at the bell opening.
Inside, the church features an Early English chancel and chancel arch. Notable fittings include a Romanesque font that is tub-shaped on a Perpendicular base and a monument to James Belcher from 1722 located on the north wall of the chancel, which is decorated with cherubs. The date 1662 is carved on the highest stage of the tower.
