Description

Little Barford Mill and the attached farm building are located in Barford St. John & St. Michael. The mill consists of two sections, dating from the 18th century or earlier, while the shelter shed is from the late 17th or early 18th century. The mill is constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble and features a stone slate roof laid in diminishing courses, with two brick stacks at the ends. The right part of the mill has a two-unit plan, is a single storey plus attic, and has a two-window range. An off-centre doorway on the right has a plain wood surround, a panelled door, and a wooden lintel, flanked by two boarded-up windows with original lintels. There are also two ruinous wooden windows in the attic. The left part of the mill has regular coursed ironstone and a corrugated iron roof, with a single unit plan, also single storey plus attic. It features a plank door on the right with a plain wooden surround and wooden lintel, a small window with wood surround on the left, and a ventilation slit. The attic has a long narrow window with wooden slats and lintel, along with a plank loft door, and a plank door with wooden lintel on the far left. Inside, the mill wheel is preserved in the single storey extension. The attached shelter shed and barn on the left are made of regular coursed ironstone rubble and have a hipped thatched roof, forming an L-plan. The single storey barn has three bays at the rear, with a central plank door framed in plain wood and a small window to the left with wood surrounds. The roof structure includes trenched purlins, principals, and common rafters. The shelter shed consists of two bays with a trenched purlin roof and common rafters. Measured drawings and a section of the mill machinery can be found in Woodstock museum.
