Description

HOOK NORTON NETTING STREET SP3533 (South side) 10/53 The Manor House 08/12/55 (Formerly listed under Knitting Street) - II Manor House. Datestone 1636/RA. Coursed regular ironstone rubble with Welsh slate roof laid to diminishing courses. Paired stone stacks. Stone copings. L-plan: Kitchen, hall, parlour range and service wing. Garden front of 2 storeys with 3 gabled dormers, flush with wall face. Three bays. Entrance to right of centre into hall. 2-storey canted bay window to parlour end. 4-light stone mullioned window with hood mould and label stops to hall. 2- and 3-light stone mullioned windows with hood-moulds and label stops to front and rear. Sundial below central dormer. Cellar beneath parlour. Rear has c.1935 porch and apsidal stair turret. Interior: Original plan of kitchen, screens, hall and parlour is still discernible. Wooden spiral stair to service wing. Stone fireplaces, mostly renewed and re-set. History: In the C17 the Manor House belonged to the Austin family. The datestone with crest is attributed to Robert Austin who is recorded as rebilding his house at this time. (Wood-Jones, R.B. - Traditional Domestic Architecture in the Banbury Region, 1963, p265).
