Description

Barn. Built around 1400, with the south wall possibly rebuilt later. The barn has undergone 19th-century repairs. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and squared coursed ironstone, topped with a steeply pitched, corrugated-iron roof that was originally thatched. The barn comprises six bays. A porch features wide plank doors and weatherboarded gable. Inside, there is a threshing floor located in the third bay from the right. Small square ventilation holes are present in the right-hand end gable. The interior reveals six cruck trusses set into the walls approximately 5 feet above ground level. The trusses feature collar and tie beams, arched braces and saddles, alongside a ridge purlin, side purlins, and windbraces. A midstrey is largely original, with a 20th-century repair. The barn shares similarities in detail with the barn at Church Enstone (dated 1382) and the barn at Swalcliffe (dated 1409).
