Description

The Hermitage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of squared, coursed limestone and has a steeply pitched stone slate roof, laid to diminishing courses. The roof features four renewed brick ridge and end stacks, two of which have chamfered stone bases, and a stone-coped gable on the left side. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with two storeys and an attic, and has a six-window front. The off-centre entrance to the right is accessed via a gabled porch, added in the 20th century, and contains a six-panelled door. To the right of the porch are three sash windows with glazing bars in flush wood frames, and chamfered wood lintels. Three similar windows are above, and to the left of the porch are three 2- and 4-light wood mullioned and transomed windows with chamfered wood lintels, with three similar windows above. There are three roof dormers with hipped slate roofs, wood casements, and wrought-iron casement fasteners. The interior is believed to contain a 17th-century back staircase originally from The Court, which was re-used as the main front staircase. The interior was not inspected.
