Description
No. 27 Sheep Street is a shop and dwelling, now used as a shop and offices, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some mid-19th century elements. The building features coursed limestone rubble, rendered rubble and brick with stucco dressings, and Welsh-slate roofs with brick and rendered end stacks. It consists of two parallel ranges, with two storeys and three storeys.
The two-storey stuccoed front has a plinth, a storey band, a moulded cornice, and panelled flanking pilasters. It features a panelled parapet that rises in the centre with a shallow gable. The symmetrical three-window arrangement has 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, along with a central doorway that has a four-panel door, an ornamental overlight, and a stucco door case with pilasters, a dentil cornice, and a frieze with egg-and-dart mouldings. The doorway is now flanked by 20th-century shop windows.
The earlier three-storey rubble rear range has sash windows with rubble flat arches but is partly obscured at the ground floor by later extensions. Inside, there are plaster modillion cornices, a dog-leg staircase with winders, a stick balustrade, and a wreathed mahogany handrail.
