Description

This building is a bakehouse and brewhouse located about 10 metres west of Down House. It dates from the 17th century and was altered and extended in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The ground floor is made of red brick, with an earlier character at its base, while the first floor is tile hung, featuring some weatherboarding. The rear elevations are also tile hung and weather boarded, topped with a plain tiled roof. The structure is two storeys high with a hipped roof and has lean-to outshots that project to the right and at the right return, along with a single storey range attached to the rear right.

On the first floor, there are wooden casement and mullioned openings, and on the ground floor, there is a shuttered window to the left and boarded doors to the right and in the side of the projecting outshot. Inside, the building features a clasped purlin and tie beam roof, with plastered framed partitions and a loft floor in the left end bay. Notable original internal features include a large brick fireplace or forge in the centre, with a stand for a copper nearby, and a two-tier bake oven to the right. The bakehouse is connected to Down House by a later pentice roofed walkway.
