Description
The boundary wall to Swaylands School, located along the Penshurst Road and Marlpit Corner, dates from the 1880s. It features roughly-dressed sandstone that frames the entrance, while the other sections are constructed of brick with a dentil moulding beneath the coping.
The walls extend along the Penshurst Road and curve around Marlpit Corner to the east, leading to the entrance of the drive to Swaylands School and the stable yard. At the main entrance, the sandstone walls are low and topped with stone coping, which is adorned with iron railings that have a barleysugar top rail supported by standards with wrought iron scrolls. The entrance is marked by squat octagonal gate piers topped with two-tier pyramidal coping. The walls rise to taller brick sections that curve inward at the stable yard entrance to the west, where there is a pair of 19th-century timber gates.
This boundary wall has group value with Swaylands School, which is separately listed in the parish of Penshurst.
