Description

The boundary wall, gate piers, and letter box at Margaret Beavan Special School are notable features made of regularly-coursed squared blocks of red sandstone. The wall, which is 1.5 metres high, begins at the south-west corner of the site and extends 55 metres to the south-east, then 125 metres to the north-east, leading to a King Edward VII letter box, and continues an additional 17 metres to a pair of ashlar v-jointed gate piers. Each gate pier has a moulded cornice and a ball finial. The wall then stretches 120 metres to the north-west, where it includes a tall pair of ashlar gate piers located approximately 85 metres from the south-east end. This section of the wall rises in two ramped steps to reach the gate piers, one of which has a shallow pyramidal cap. Here, the wall reaches about 3 metres in height, increasing to 3.5 metres for the remaining section. Behind the gate pier without a cap, a secondary wall runs alongside the approach to the house, featuring plain stone piers and half-round copings. The gateway is fitted with a pair of spear-headed railed gates. This boundary wall marks the extent of the original garden of the school, which was formerly a villa, and contributes to the group value with the former lodge.
