Description
The boundary walls to the south and west of The Blue School were built in 1900 by H Dare Bryan. They are made of squared local stone rubble with ashlar copings that extend as bands under the upstand piers. The walls are low, approximately 750mm high, and feature flush chamfered copings. At intervals, there are broad flush piers that rise at the center and have ball finials, also with flush copings of the same style. There are 11 piers in total, ranging from approximately 1.6m to 2m high, which reflect the changes in street level. Originally, iron railings were placed between the piers, but these were removed in 1940. At the northern end, facing Portway, there is a single gate with standards. The wall curves back to Portway Avenue, where there is a broad pair of gates and standards between two of the piers, along with return dwarf walls leading to a short flight of three stone steps. This design is part of the original plan and contributes to the group value of the site.
