Description

This is a stable block, dating from the 1880s and built alongside Swaylands School. It is constructed from local sandstone laid in courses and has a concrete tile roof, with brick chimney shafts. The design is in the Tudor style. The building is arranged in three-and-a-half ranges around a courtyard, with the east range likely used as accommodation for grooms or servants.

The stable block is a single storey with an attic. It shares architectural details with the school lodge, including coped gables and gabled dormers with copings and kneelers. The east front is asymmetrical, with nine windows and gables on the left and right, alongside two gabled dormers and four flat-topped attic dormers. A 20th-century porch is located to the right of centre, with a hipped roof. The windows are mostly original, containing small panes of glass, although some have been replaced. A clock is positioned on the ridge, although a cupola that would have accompanied it is now missing. A prominent chimney stack is located to the right of the centre, featuring clustered shafts, a batter and a corbelled brick coping. The courtyard elevations continue the Tudor style, with gabled and attic dormers and small-pane windows. The north range has a Tudor arched doorway with a chamfered head, located to the right (west). A similar doorway is present in the west range. The south range is shorter, with an entrance to the yard on its south side.

The interior has not been inspected. The stable block holds group value with Swaylands School, which is listed separately in the parish of Penshurst.
