Description
The lodge was built around the 1880s as part of the Swaylands School complex, and is contemporary with the stable block. The main school building is separately listed in Penshurst parish. Constructed from local sandstone ashlar, it has a concrete tile roof and stacks with brick shafts, and is built in a Tudor style.
The lodge is positioned at the entrance to Swaylands School, facing west so that the main room overlooks the drive, and has a service wing set at right angles to the rear. A porch block is situated to the northwest, and the front door is in the west wall.
The lodge is single-story with an attic. The west front is asymmetrical, with three bays. The porch block, slightly set back on the left, has an embattled parapet and a Tudor arched doorway with a 19th-century plank and cover strip door. The left return of the porch features three round-headed one-light windows. The main block to the right has a ground floor bay with an embattled parapet; the windows here have 20th-century glazing, replacing the original small-pane casements. Above this are two gabled dormers with kneelers and copings, retaining their original small-pane casements. The north return of the main block, facing Penshurst Road, has a coped gable to the right, with an original two-light window, and a gabled dormer to the left with a matching original window.
The interior has not been inspected.
The lodge has group value with Swaylands School.
