Description

The building is a former forge located approximately 5 meters north of Forge House in Speldhurst, Langton Green. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and was converted to offices around 1980. The structure is constructed from coursed blocks of sandstone ashlar, with some brick at the rear, and features a peg-tile roof.

The forge is a low building oriented on a rough east-west axis, with its west gable end facing The Green and its main facade directed south towards Forge House. It has a three-room plan, although it is unclear if any of the internal crosswalls are original from the 19th century. The building is single-storey.

The exterior displays an irregular front with three windows and three doorways, all of which occupy original openings, except for the right end window that blocks another original doorway. The windows and part-glazed doors are all from the 20th century. The gable-ended roof includes a couple of 20th-century skylights. The front gable is made of stone ashlar and features shaped kneelers and coping, along with a ventilator slit that has a chamfered surround.

Inside, the building has plain carpentry details. This former forge is a well-constructed stone building that contributes to an attractive and varied group of buildings along the east side of The Green.
