Description

A pair of small cottages dating from the early 19th century, situated on The Green in Langton Green. The cottages are built of randomly bonded red-brown brick, with some areas showing a Flemish bond pattern. They have brick stacks and a slate roof.

The cottages are contemporary and face west, arranged as mirror images of each other. Each has a single room width and two rooms in depth, with a central staircase. An axial stack between the cottages serves back-to-back fireplaces. Number 1 is the cottage on the right (south) and Number 2 is on the left.

The cottages are two storeys high, with secondary, flat-roofed, two-storey service extensions to the rear. The front facades have symmetrical fenestration, with four first-floor windows in each cottage, each featuring a low segmental brick arch and C19 iron-framed casements with glazing bars. The ground floor breaks forward slightly, and each cottage has a single, large window. Number 2 has a simple casement with glazing bars, while Number 1 has a similar casement with a decorative Gothick pattern in the top section of the glazing bars. Both cottages have gable-ended roofs. Central doorways in the end walls provide direct entry into the front rooms; both contain original plank doors with coverstrips. Number 1 has a plain timber hood supported on shaped brackets.

The interiors contain plain joinery, and no exposed carpentry. The roofs were not inspected.

According to the resident of Number 1, the cottages were originally built as gardener’s cottages for Holmewood House. They contribute to an attractive and varied group of listed buildings along The Green.
