Description
Hollonds Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the early 19th century, with a late 19th-century extension. The original section is constructed from sandstone rubble laid in rough courses, featuring stone ashlar dressings, while the first floor of the porch showcases exposed timber framing. The late 19th-century extension uses a similar masonry style but incorporates larger, more neatly dressed sandstone blocks. The building has brick stacks and chimney shafts, topped with a peg-tile roof, which was formerly thatch according to the farmer.
The farmhouse has a three-room lobby entrance plan and faces north onto The Green. The axial stack is positioned more towards the rear, between the left and centre rooms, with the lobby entrance located behind a two-storey porch. The right (west) end room, which has a rear lateral stack, is part of the late 19th-century extension.
The exterior features a front with a one-to-two window arrangement at ground floor level, while the only first-floor window is located on the porch. This first-floor window is a 20th-century casement without glazing bars. The ground floor windows are late 19th-century casements with glazing bars, with similar windows at each end. The front doorway, positioned left of centre, contains a plank door and is set behind the two-storey porch. The porch has stone at ground floor level and a full-width elliptical arch made of plain sandstone ashlar. The first floor of the porch jetties slightly forward, and the gable features plain bargeboards with an apex finial, which is also present on the gable ends of the main block. The main block has a projecting flat stone band at first floor level.
The interior was not available for inspection at the time of this survey. Hollonds Farmhouse was likely built as the home farm for the nearby Decimus Burton house, Hollonds, and it contributes to the group of attractive buildings surrounding The Green.
