Description
Hope Mill is a mill that has been converted into housing, dating from around 1768 and reusing earlier timber. It features a timber frame and is weatherboarded on a red and blue chequered brick base, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building stands two storeys high with an attic and has a gambrel roof with a central stack and a raking dormer. On the first floor, there are two wooden casement windows, while the ground floor has three casements, a garage door, and a half-glazed door to the left. The left side of the building is designed as three storeys and an attic. The right side, which faces the river, has brick walls that extend down as substantial buttressing and originally housed two barrel-vaulted chambers for the mill gearing. Attached to the mill are the remains of two wheels: the first is a breast-shot wheel, with only the wheel shaft remaining, measuring about 13 feet 9 inches wide. The second, an older 19th-century overshot wheel, is about 9 feet 3 inches wide and consists of three bays formed by four sets of cast-iron hub assemblies on a cast iron shaft. These wheels originally powered three pairs of grinding stones in a line, which is an unusual arrangement.
Inside, very little machinery remains. The interior has a full framed structure with substantial beams, some of which have been reused.
