Description
The bridge at Risebridge is a structure from the 18th century or earlier, with a 19th-century extension. It is made of sandstone and has been extended with red brick, now covered with earth embankment. The older stone face on the west side, which is upstream, features two chamfered rounded arches and a central pier, with each arch spanning about 4 feet. Above these arches is a stone parapet that retains the base of the embankment. Downstream, to the east, the bridge has been extended by a single arched and tunnel vaulted brick bridge from the mid-19th century, which functions somewhat as a culvert. This extension and embankment were connected to the construction of the nearby railway bridge. The hamlet of Risebridge, named after this bridge, was previously known as Stonebridge in the 17th century.
