Description

Paine’s Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century. It is located on the west side of Goodhurst Riseden Lane. The ground floor is clad in red and blue brick, while the first floor is tile-hung. The roof is tiled, with a half-hipped form and a stack positioned centrally to the right. A gabled dormer window was added in the 20th century to the right. The house has two storeys and an attic, resting on a plinth partly constructed of sandstone. The front elevation features two three-light wooden casement windows on the left-hand side, and two and three-light casements on each floor to the right, at a lower level. A boarded door is set within a gabled porch positioned centrally to the right. Truncated stacks are visible on the return elevations. A catslide extension, dating from the 20th century, projects to the rear, along with further 20th-century extensions. The interior exhibits a full timber frame with large, roughly hewn beams displaying chamfered edges. A large inglenook fireplace contains a bread oven, the stack of which was constructed in two phases; the right-hand side is later. The right-hand section of the house was likely rebuilt slightly later than the main range. An 18th-century extension is located at the rear and features a bolection moulded fireplace surround.
