Description

Trillinghurst Farmhouse is a house largely dating from around 1600, with 19th-century cladding, but containing an older core and wing. The ground floor is timber framed and clad with red brick, while the first floor has ornamental tile hanging. The roof is tiled, and the house follows a lobby entry plan with a rear wing.

The main structure is two storeys with a garret and basement. It has a high, weathered plinth and a half-hipped roof with a stack in the centre to the right. The front has two-light and two three-light mullioned and transomed casement windows on each floor, with a single light to the centre right on the first floor. A 19th-century doorway, with a boarded door and a rectangular fanlight, is centrally positioned on the ground floor. Segmentally headed basement openings are located to the left and right. A 20th-century extension has been added to the rear right.

A gabled wing extends to the rear left, featuring an offset stack in English bond and a catslide roof overhang to the main range.

Inside, a stone-lined staircase leads down to brick cellars. There is a partially blocked inglenook fireplace with a built-in fireback dated 1681, a moulded chimney and ceiling beams. The roof is a soot-blackened queen-strut roof. The rear wing contains a very low hearth, a beamed structure, a bread oven and a soot-blackened, sans purlin roof.
