Description
Barnes Mill is a mill dating from around 1700, constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding. It stands two storeys high with attics beneath a mansard roof. The windows have been altered due to its modern conversion into a residence. The roof is covered with peg tiles and the building has a rectangular plan. The mill once featured a breast-shot water wheel, of which the sweep still exists. The structure is framed in heavy oak and includes fine roof trusses with queen posts and elaborate bracing. The passing-braces are halved into the east and west walls. The up-and-down shaft, made of polygonal timber, is still in place and supports an octagonally canted great spur wheel with eight compass-arms. Additionally, the sack-hoist friction ring remains, also featuring compass-arms.
