Description

Stemborough Mill is a mill building that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates largely from the early 19th century, although there are fragments of granite rubble plinth walling that suggest an earlier structure. The building was extensively restored in 1965 when it was converted for residential use. It features painted brickwork and a Welsh slate roof.

The main block is two and a half storeys tall and has two bays, positioned against the mill dam. There is a wide doorway to the left, with 2-light casement windows above it on each floor, and an attic light beneath a gabled dormer. To the right, there is a large full-height window on the first floor above a small original opening to the wheel chamber, which has a cambered brick head. A lower range is recessed to the left, consisting of two bays and one and a half storeys, with a cambered-headed doorway and an upper loading door that has been converted into a window in a gabled dormer.

Inside, all of the machinery remains intact. The water wheel, dated 1901, was made by Cartwright of Loughborough and is of the overshot type. The drive system includes two wallowers that are unusually mounted on a horizontal axis. There are also two pairs of millstones, made of French Burr and millstone grit. The only remnants of the grain feeder and sack hoist systems is a belt pulley.
