Description

Hicknotts Cottages are a house, now arranged as a row of cottages, dating back to the 16th century or possibly earlier, with alterations and extensions made in the early 18th century. The construction is timber-framed, with some of the frame exposed and filled with plaster and red brick. The first floor is tile-hung. The roof is covered in plain tiles.

The left-hand block is a two-storey lobby-entry design with a gabled roof and a central chimney stack. It has an irregular arrangement of windows; three 2-light and 3-light wooden casements on each floor, with two boarded doors in the centre, either side of the stack. A section of the building projects outwards on the left.

To the right is a two-storey and garret wing, with exposed timber framing on the ground floor. This wing has a half-hipped roof facing the road and chimney stacks at the rear centre and at the end. The upper level has a single garret window, along with 2-, 4- and 2-light wooden casements. The ground floor of this wing features a nearly continuous run of wooden casements. Catslide outshots project from the right and left sides of this wing. The left-hand outshot has a pentice and contains a boarded door on its left side.
