Description

Coggers Cottages is a row of cottages, originally including shops, dating from the 16th century or earlier, though extensively re-clad in the 18th century. The building is timber framed and faced with painted brick on a sandstone base, with the timber frame exposed on the right-hand return, incorporating plaster and red brick infill. It has a plain tiled roof, hipped to the right, with three stacks arranged centrally, a stack to the rear right, and five flat-roofed dormers. The first floor has two original two-light wooden casement windows, two late 20th-century replacement wooden casements, and a late 20th-century three-light casement. The ground floor features small canted bays at the left end and central left, with a sash window between them, and two-light and three-light 20th-century wooden casements to the right. Three half-glazed doors are present, those to the centre left and right having blocked doorways beside them. The right-hand return displays an exposed close-studded timber frame to the main range, with a two-bay extension featuring widely spaced studs and mid-rails. The interior is reported to contain interesting features, including chamfered beams. The building was once an inn.
