Description
This is a barn located about 20 meters east of Portobello, likely built in the early 18th century, during the same period as the main construction of Portobello. The west end was rebuilt in the early 19th century to create a more refined appearance facing the garden. The barn features a framed construction, clad in weatherboarding, with the rebuilt west end made of Flemish bond brick and a peg-tile roof.
The barn has a three-bay layout oriented east-west, with the west end overlooking the garden behind Portobello. There is probably a later outshut on the south side, and the main entrance is located on the south side into the end bay.
The exterior is single-storey. The west end is tile-hung at the apex, which includes a clock face set in a moulded stone frame with decorative vermiculated spandrels. The outshut has five 19th-century fixed iron frame windows with small panes, and there is likely a 20th-century four-light casement window on the north side with square leaded panes. A weathervane dated 1939 is positioned at the apex of the west end.
Inside, the wall framing consists of light scantling with diagonal braces attached to the wall posts. The roof features a tie-beam construction with queen posts and clasped purlins, with the ties resting on jowled wall posts and straight braces extending from the posts to the ties.
The barn has group value with Portobello, and the rebuilt west end contributes significantly to the overall setting of the house.
