Description

The Cottage, located southeast of Portobello, includes garden walls and was converted in 1934 for Robert Bradley from an 18th century or early 19th century stable block associated with Portobello. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a roof covered with peg-tiles and lead rolls, along with brick stacks from the 1930s.

The Cottage is positioned southeast of Portobello and has a roof that runs west to east. The garden walls at the rear of the house connect the barn with the Cottage. Despite the significant changes made during the 1930s conversion, the former stable remains an important part of the context of a fine 18th century gentry house. The existing layout retains the access to the former loft on the north side, facing Portobello.

The exterior consists of a two-storey cottage with a hipped roof and original moulded eaves cornice. The south elevation features four windows and a front door with a gabled porch located to the right of center. The windows are two- and three-light casements with square leaded panes that date from the conversion, including one ground floor oriel. The west elevation, which faces the road, has a first floor coved oriel from 1934 with a transomed window, as well as a three-light ground floor window with a segmental arched head, both also glazed with square leaded panes. The north elevation includes various 20th century casements and a flight of external steps to the west leading to a former loft doorway. The garden walls feature an archway next to the barn.

The Cottage has group value with Portobello. The owner possesses a copy of an elevation of the house dated 1826 and signed by John Adams, a surveyor from Tenterden, which illustrates the stable block and its original openings on the south side.
