Description
The garden walls, railings, garden gate, and piers to the carriage gate are likely from the 18th century or early 19th century, featuring late 19th-century ironwork. The garden walls are constructed in Flemish bond brick, with the southern section built on a ragstone plinth. The cast iron railings and gate piers enhance the property.
The walls and railings create the boundary for the garden located west and in front of Portobello, with the gate piers marking the entrance to the Cottage, which was previously the stable block. There is an additional section of wall leading to the garden to the south.
The exterior features low brick walls in front of the house, topped with iron railings that have square-section verticals and elaborate spear finials adorned with scrolls. The garden gate shares a similar design. The gate piers flanking the cottage's gateway are fluted columns topped with depressed bulbous finials, one of which is stamped "Hill and Smith, Baterley Hill."
These structures are included for their group value with Portobello and contribute to the charming streetscape of this attractive village.
