Description
The stable courtyard located about 25 metres west of Kilndown House dates from around 1849 to 1855 and was designed by architect R C Carpenter. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar details and features a slate roof. The courtyard is completely enclosed, with buildings on the east and north sides, while the west and south sides are bordered by walls approximately 8 feet high. The main entrance is located in the west wall, which has capped gate piers and boarded gates.
On the north side, the main range is a single storey with a loft, featuring a segmentally headed carriage opening, an arched loft doorway, and a wooden casement with a four-centred arched doorway to the left. The left-hand (northern) range includes a gabled dormer and a wooden casement, along with a four-centred arched doorway. This range is extended by a single storey with a casement and an arched down. The roofs throughout are gabled, with stacks that have been partially reconstructed, located to the left and centre. The rear elevations feature arched doorways and windows, and the courtyard floor is made of brick pavers. This stable yard is associated with Kilndown House and is included for its group value.
