Description
TQ 64 SE BRENCHLEY BRENCHLEY ROAD, HOMEBUSH
6/45 Whitethorn Cottage
II
House, formerly 2 cottages. probably late C17, late C20 alterations. Framed construction, the ground floor underbuilt in Flemish bond brick, the first floor tile-hung; brick stacks.
Plan: The house faces north, fronting the road. The original arrangement appears to have been 2 cottages each with a principal room heated from an end stack and a service room in a rear outshut and entrances into a passage at the centre of the range. The passage partitions have been removed and the house is now entered on the left (east) return.
Exterior: 2 storeys, and attic. Symmetrical 3-bay front. Roof hipped at ends; projecting end stacks with tile-hung set-offs. 2- and 3-light C19 and C20 casement windows, the ground floor windows 2-panes per light.
Interior: Exposed carpentry includes a step-stopped crossbeam in the left hand (east) room. Open fireplaces, the right hand fireplace with a plain lintel and brick jambs. Wall-framing survives to the sole plate on the rear wall, the posts with formed jowls.
Roof: Clasped purlin roof, some of the timbers replaced.
