Description
The Poet at Matfield is a public house dating from around 1700, with 19th and early 20th century additions. The building features a ground floor of Flemish bond brick and a first floor that is tile-hung, topped with a peg-tile roof and brick stacks.
The pub faces west-southwest and originally had a plan that included two rooms on the front. The larger room on the left served as a heated parlour, while the unheated service room was on the right. At the back, there is a service block that includes a rear lateral stack, which is said to have served a bakery in the building's rear section. There are likely 20th century one-room plan additions at both ends of the front block, and the partition between the parlour and the service room has been removed.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front. The main block has gabled ends, and there are single-storey additions on both the left and right. A central open gabled porch features lattice panels and a half-glazed front door from the 19th or early 20th century, which still has its original etched glass displaying the name of the pub. The first floor has three early 20th century windows with square leaded casements, while the ground floor has two three-light windows with high transoms. Each single-storey addition also has a three-light transomed window.
Inside, the left room retains a timber chimney-piece from around 1800, featuring a cambered arch and flanked by contemporary cupboards. There is a 19th century matchboarded dado and plain exposed carpentry. The roof has not been inspected.
