Description

A pair of houses, likely originally a single dwelling, dating to around the late 17th century or potentially earlier. The ground floor is constructed of Flemish bond brick, while the first floor is rendered over a timber frame, which is believed to survive at ground floor level. The roof is covered with peg tiles, and there are brick stacks.

The building’s layout is unclear due to a lack of internal inspection, but it appears to be four rooms wide. The two central rooms were likely heated by back-to-back fireplaces sharing a central axial stack, with the left-hand room having its own end stack. Number 6, on the left, is double-fronted, while Number 5 has a front door positioned to the left, leading to a lobby entrance against the axial stack.

The building is two storeys high. The roof is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right. The front facade has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, with a 2:1 window ratio. C19 or C20 plank front doors are protected by shallow gabled porch hoods supported on brackets. Number 6 has two first-floor and two ground-floor casement windows, with two panes per light. The first-floor window on the left extends across a stud or wall post. Number 5 exhibits one first-floor and one ground-floor plate glass 2-light casement window.

The interior has not been inspected, but Number 6 is said to contain exposed carpentry and an open fireplace with a replaced lintel.

The building is reported to have been dated 1623, but this may require revision following a more thorough internal and roof inspection.
