Description

Ewell Monastery The Abbey Tithe Barn is a former tithe barn that has been converted into a chapel. It dates back to the 15th century and was altered in the 20th century. The exterior is constructed of stone and features a tiled roof along with 20th-century windows.

On the south-west wall, there are five buttresses and a triangular tiled hood above five narrow windows that are built into the original door opening facing south-east. The north-west side of the building has been truncated; here, the lower part of the wall is stone, and the roof descends to single storey eaves level on the north-east, where there is a row of seven narrow windows beneath a gable with tile-hanging above the stone. Adjacent to this is a smaller gable end that is cement rendered above the stone.

The north-east facade is entirely stone, featuring an entrance door on the north-west side and brick cloister arches to the south-east, above which is a stone-faced gabled roof projection containing four narrow windows. The south-east facade is also made of stone, with a hipped roof that has larger and smaller hips corresponding to the gables on the north-west. A buttress topped with a bell is located to the south-west. There is a large central porch with a tiled lean-to roof and an entrance from the south-west. To the north-east, there is a brick projection that connects to a 20th-century cloister, which is not of special interest.

Inside, the barn consists of four bays, with aisles on both sides featuring passing braces, upright posts with jowls, queen posts, angled open struts, purlins, and no ridgepiece except in one end bay. This building was formerly the tithe barn for St Mary's Abbey and is currently in separate occupation.
