Description

This oasthouse likely dates from the 19th century, with rebuilding occurring in the early 20th century following a fire and subsequent repairs after damage from the 1987 hurricane. It is built of Flemish bond brick with peg-tile roofs.

The plan consists of adjoining rectangular blocks arranged on a north-south axis, with a cylindrical kiln at the north end of the western block.

The asymmetrical north elevation, facing the road, features the gable end of the east stowage block to the left (east), containing one ground-floor and one first-floor window with 9 panes of glass. The cylindrical kiln to the right retains its conical roof and cowl, and has one unglazed window on its west side. The east return of the east stowage block includes a door on the left and a matching 9-pane window above; the rear elevation has a loft door. The west stowage block has a large 20th-century doorway in its south end. The west return exhibits one first-floor and one ground-floor 9-pane window to the right, and a door and loft door to the left.

Inside, segmental arched doorways connect the stowage blocks. The kiln does not retain its original furnace.

The oasthouse is part of a farmstead group linked to the Old Barn Tea House. A painted advertisement for the tea house, reading 'Old Barn Tea House. Oceans of cream', is displayed on the north side of the kiln in large lettering.
