Description
Laundry Cottage, dated 1855 as indicated by a plaque on the gable end, is likely to have been designed by George Devey, given its close proximity to Home Farm, where he undertook extensive work. The cottage is built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with pale brick headers. Decorative diaper patterns adorn the gables. The roof is covered with fishscale tiles, featuring fleur-de-lys ridge tiles, and is topped by two tall brick chimneys with arrises and multi-stepped cornices. Elaborate carved and pierced bargeboards are present. The corners are defined by alternating sandstone quions. The cottage follows a square plan, with two storeys and two windows on each side. The ground floor windows are three-light casements with transoms, set in chamfered reveals with gauged brick arches and sloped stone cills. A gabled porch provides entrance through a four-centred arch, with benches to the side and a four-panel door.
