Description
The cartshed located immediately northeast of Little Lucy's Cottage is a Grade II listed structure built in 1875 on the Leigh estate for Samuel Morley, who owned the estate during that time. It is constructed of red brick with bullnose brick dressings, and the gables are designed to imitate timber framing with roughcast infill. The roof is covered with peg tiles and reflects a Vernacular Revival style.
The building has a rectangular plan and is single storey. It features a symmetrical design with some variations in the openings. The central area contains a 2-bay open fronted cartshed, flanked by store rooms. The entrances to the cartshed are separated by an iron column. The store rooms on either side have framed gables with timber pendants. The left gable includes a segmental-arched doorway on the left, a segmental-arched 2-light small-pane casement on the right, and two low round-headed openings. The right gable features a central segmental-arched doorway with a 19th-century stable door, flanked by two unglazed 2-light windows. A datestone from 1875 displays the initials SM.
The roof structure consists of tie-beam, king post, and strut trusses from 1875, with diagonal boarding that conceals the rafters.
Samuel Morley, a Liberal Member of Parliament and a successful hosiery manufacturer, employed both George Devey and George and Peto for the construction of houses and cottages on the Leigh estate. The cartshed has group value with Little Lucy's Cottage.
