Description

Ivy Cottage is a small house dating to around the mid-19th century, built for the Leigh Estate. The ground floor is built of Flemish bond brick, while the first floor is tile-hung with blue diapering in the tiles; the roof is of peg tiles, and there are brick stacks. The design is in the Tudor style.

The house faces east onto Lower Street. It has a T-shaped plan, with the main block and a crosswing to the left (south). The entrance is located on the east front between the crosswing and the main block. It likely originally consisted of two rooms, with a rear lateral stack heating the main block.

The two-storey facade has an asymmetrical two-window arrangement. The gable of the crosswing is on the left, with a two-storey gabled porch alongside it; the first floor of the porch juts out. The porch has pierced, cusped bargeboards, and the gable is decorated to imitate timber framing. The porch was likely originally open-fronted but now has a late 19th or 20th century plank door. The crosswing gable has pierced cusped bargeboards and a pendant at the apex. Its ground floor window is an original four-light transomed casement with polygonal iron panes, while the two-light first floor window has been reglazed in the 20th century. To the right of the porch is an original two-light ground floor casement with sexagonal iron panes and a first-floor oriel window on brackets above, also reglazed in the 20th century, with a pentice roof. Matching bargeboards are on the right gable end.

The interior has not been inspected, but may contain original features.

The Leigh Estate was developed by Samuel Morley, a Liberal Member of Parliament and hosiery millionaire, and construction on the estate employed both George Devey and George and Peto.
