Description

The stable block, located north east of Avalon, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a slate roof with brick stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the main block facing south east and a short wing extending at right angles to the east. The main range includes a central coach house with a loft above, flanked by stables on either side, with the southern section containing a heated tack room.

The exterior is single-storey with a loft, and the east wing is also single-storey. The south east front is asymmetrical, with the coach house positioned to the right of centre, taller and gabled at the front, featuring a clock face in the gable. Below the clock, there is a central loft door flanked by 12-pane 19th-century sash windows and two pairs of tall 19th-century plank doors leading to the coach house. To the left of the coach house, the range includes three doors, a round-headed 19th-century window with glazing bars, and two first-floor 6-pane sash windows. To the right of the coach house, there is one 19th-century round-headed ground floor window with glazing bars and a 6-pane first-floor sash. The east wing has a round-headed window that matches the others and two stable doors.

The building has group value with Avalon and the outbuilding that was used as John Herring's studio.
