Description

Ramhurst Manor House is a timber-framed house, likely dating from the 16th century or earlier, which was almost entirely recased externally and underwent substantial interior alterations in the 18th century (1716, as indicated by a date on the rainwater butt). The house is now L-shaped, with the northern wing destroyed by fire. The entrance has been moved to the east front. It is two storeys and an attic in height, with four windows, and a blank bay on the left. The roof is tiled, hipped to the right, and half-hipped to the left, with two hipped gabled dormers containing 18th-century iron casements. A heavy, moulded and dentilled eaves cornice runs around the left end. The exterior is of red brick with a diaper pattern of blue headers and a first-floor band. Gauged brick arches frame near-flush sash windows with glazing bars in moulded wood frames. A six-panel double door is situated under a heavy segmental pedimented hood with a shell soffit, supported by large carved brackets. A modern, harmonious two-storey, two-window extension is on the right. A single-storey left projection was formerly a smokehouse. An ornamental rainwater head with a gargoyle spout is affixed to a pipe and lead butt along the wall. The garden front has five windows, with a two-window right wing in a similar style. A modern loggia and balcony are on the west end. Inside, there are two complete rooms of 18th-century panelling, and some re-used 16th-century panelling. At the south end, a stone mounting block is located.

Ramhurst Manor House is part of a group that includes its coach house, a large barn, a smaller barn, and the garden walls.
