Description
Mereworth War Memorial is a First World War memorial, built around 1920, with an additional plaque added later. It is made of stone and features a slate plaque. The memorial consists of a free-standing stone tablet surrounded by a shouldered and rock-hewn border. The polished face of the tablet is inscribed with the names of 141 Mereworth combatants who served in the First World War, with the names of the 21 who fell marked by a cross. At the top of the tablet, there is an inscribed dedication that reads, "IN PERPETUAL HONOUR OF MEREWORTH MEN WHO SERVED/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918."
At the base of the memorial, there is a later wedge-shaped stone faced with a slate plaque. This plaque is inscribed with "AND LEST WE FORGET THE FALLEN/ 1939 – 1945" and lists the names of the nine Mereworth combatants who died in the Second World War.
