Description

This building is a row of cottages located at 781-789 London Road, dating from the 18th century, with evidence of an earlier structure in the cottage at the far left, likely from the 16th century. The cottages have timber-framed elevations that are now covered in a mix of painted brick and painted rubble stone. No 789 features exposed framing on both floors, while the first floor has creosoted weather-boarding. The row has a long continuous roof that steps over No 785, with a full hip at the left end and a half-hip at the right end. There is a central stack off-ridge at the front of No 781.

Nos 781-783 are two storeys high with two windows on the first floor, featuring glazing bar sashes. There is a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor to the right, along with a 20th-century glazed door to the right, both covered by a continuous hood. A large segment-headed casement window is located at the extreme right.

Nos 785-789 are also two storeys high, displaying irregular fenestration with four windows on the first floor and five on the ground floor. The windows include a mix of sliding and hung casements, glazing bar sashes, and non-opening windows with lattice on the glazing bars. There are double boarded loft doors on the first floor at the extreme right, and boarded half-glazed doors on the ground floor to the left and right, as well as one off-centre to the left. A decorated wooden lintel is positioned over the right-hand doorway.
