Description

This is a row of nine cottages at 5-13 South Street, dating back to the 18th century. While the frontages have been altered, the structures behind are likely timber-framed.

Nos. 5 to 13 present a unified appearance, also forming a group with Nos 6, 8, 14 and 16. No. 5 has a rendered facade and an old tiled roof, with two dormers in the attic. It has three windows and a canted early 19th-century bay on the south side, featuring sash windows with glazing bars, and a central door with a flat hood and moulded architrave. No. 7 appears to be timber-framed behind a facade of red brick on the ground floor and plaster above; it features sash windows with glazing bars and a bowed shop window with glazing bars and a cornice, all under an old tiled roof. No. 9, also possibly timber-framed, has a ground floor of red brick with plaster above and an old tiled roof, with sash windows with glazing bars. No. 11, also likely timber-framed, has an old tiled roof and casement windows with glazing bars. No. 13 has a stucco facade designed to imitate masonry, an old tiled roof hipped at the south end and sash windows with glazing bars.
