Description

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I listed church located in Burham, dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries, with restoration completed in 1956. The building features a tower, nave with a south porch, and a chancel, constructed from random ragstone rubble and topped with plain tiled roofs.

The west tower, built in the 15th century, has three stages and includes pointed arched and traceried windows on the first stage above the entrance, as well as on all sides at the belfry stage. It is adorned with a crenellated parapet and an octagonal south-west stair turret that is only visible at the level of the parapet. The nave has two windows on the south side, with the porch to the left, and three windows on the north side. There are 12th-century windows on the right side of the nave's south side, while the north side features blocked windows. The blocked arcades of the north aisle are clearly visible on both the nave and chancel, with a former aisle also present on the south side.

The chancel, dating from the 13th century, has one window on each side and a 14th-century east window. Inside, simple 13th-century nave arcades are partially visible, supported by square piers and pointed single-chamfered arches. The nave features a timber roof that is braced and trussed with ashlars. The church also contains a Norman font with a square bowl decorated with arcade side motifs.
