Description

This is a cartshed, likely built in the late 18th century, located about 75 meters northwest of Lower Street Farmhouse. It was re-erected after collapsing during the storm in October 1987. The structure features a framed construction clad in weatherboarding and has a peg-tile roof.

The cartshed faces south and is situated northwest of a pond that is said to have been used for cleaning carts. It has a small, rectangular, open-fronted plan with four bays. The building is single-storey and has the potential for a loft. The symmetrical south front has a roof that is half-hipped at the ends. The bays are formed by jowled posts resting on padstones, with straight braces connecting the posts to the wall plate. On the left side, there is a loft door with strap hinges.

Inside, the structure has tie-beam trusses with queen posts and clasped purlins, but no ridge piece. Each truss features short, curved, arched braces. Some timbers have been replaced during the re-erection. The wall framing consists of slender scantling. Although there is no loft floor, the tie-beams could be used for storing implements, and temporary joists could be added for hay storage when needed.

This is an attractive small vernacular farm building typical of the region and has group value with Lower Street Farmhouse and other listed farm buildings on the farmstead.
