Description

Rose Cottage is a 17th-century cottage, originally a public house known as 'The Volunteer', that was rebuilt in the 17th century, altered in the 18th century, and refaced in the early 19th century. The building is situated sideways to the street. It has a stuccoed exterior on a deep plinth, with a very steeply pitched tiled roof and one brick chimneystack. End quoins mark the corners. The cottage is two stories high, with two windows on the front elevation, featuring 16-pane sashes. A central, round-headed doorcase contains a blank fanlight and a six-panelled door, with the top two panels glazed. The side elevation facing Town Hill has two 12-pane sashes with cambered heads on the ground floor. There are three cross-shaped iron ties visible on the façade. A blank panel is present on the first floor, and a thick band runs across both elevations, originally displaying the name of the public house.
