Description
The gate piers, gates, garden walls, and pool located to the northwest and west of Nizels House were built in the early 20th century and are likely part of the forecourt design that was created during the Edwardian remodelling of the house. They are constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone coping, while the gates are made of wrought iron and the pool features a stone margin.
The layout includes a formal garden at the western end of the forecourt, which is enclosed by entrance gates and walls on the northwest side. A gateway in the south wall of the formal garden provides access to more open garden land to the south. The entrance gateway features square-section piers topped with finials shaped like vases of fruit, flanked by a pair of elegant wrought iron gates that rise to the center. The brick walls curve gracefully on either side of the piers, incorporating semi-circles of wrought iron.
To the east, the garden wall is low, allowing visibility of the garden from the house, and is punctuated by short square-section piers with ball finials. The walls to the east, north, and south are taller, with square-section piers at the corners, while the west wall rises in the center. The south wall includes a wrought iron gate leading into the garden beyond. The pool is designed with nowy ends.
This structure is significant to the overall setting of Nizels House.
