Description

This is a terrace row of 16 houses, built in the 1840s. They are located on the west side of Augusta Road in Ramsgate, on the Mount Albion estate. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with some parts rendered, and have slate roofs. They are three storeys high, with a basement, and feature a rusticated base, a cill band, and a parapet with chimneys arranged from left to right.

Each house has two glazing bar sashes on the second floor, with gauged heads (some of which have been painted), and a projecting bow window on the basement, ground, and first floors. The first floor of each bow window has French windows with elaborate star-traceried fanlights. A continuous tented verandah runs along the front, supported by trellised piers, cast iron valancing, and heart and honeysuckle panel rails fixed on simple iron brackets. The ground floor windows are triple glazing bar sashes with Ionic pilaster surrounds, raised and fielded panels beneath, and a six-panel door to the right, featuring a semi-circular fanlight above a flight of steps. Basement entrances have single-glazing bar sashes and pointed arched doorways.

Number 1 (the house on the right-hand end) has three window bays, with a central bow, and otherwise identical detailing. Numbers 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21 and 29 have additional glazing bar sashes inserted on the first floor to the right of the bow windows. The basement areas incorporate fleur-de-lys rails and urn finial principals. Augusta Road was developed from the mid-1840s onwards on the Mount Albion estate, which was the home of Lady Augusta Murray and her family.
