Description
The former Congregational Church, now a warehouse, was built in 1838 by James Wilson. It is constructed of white brick with rendered details in a Gothic style. The entrance facade is two stories high and features a plinth, string course, and a moulded parapet that gables over the entire facade. There are paired flanking outer buttresses and larger pinnacled buttresses at the center, which includes a quatrefoil in the gable. The first floor has seven lancet windows, with the five central ones paired and raised, all set in moulded surrounds. The ground floor also has five lancets, with traceried doors and traceried panelled fanlights on either side, all within multi-moulded arched surrounds. Rendered shields are located at the center, with the inscriptions "Founded 1662" and "Erected 1838" on a marble sarcophagus attached to the center. To the right side, there is a porch featuring a fine traceried panelled and glazed door, a panelled traceried apron, and a Y-traceried fanlight in a moulded surround, which is noted as the redeeming feature of an otherwise somewhat weak design. The same architect, James Wilson, also designed the Cavendish Baptist Chapel using similar materials and style, but with Neo-Norman details.
