Description

Polands Barn and Oast is a barn with an attached oast, now functioning as a restaurant and shop. It dates from the early 17th century and features a barn that is four bays long, constructed with a timber frame. The exterior is weatherboarded, sitting on a part brick base, and topped with a thatched roof. There are some inserted windows. On the left side, there is a former cow byre from the late 18th or early 19th century, which is now the restaurant; this section is also weatherboarded and conceals some older weatherboarding from the barn. The right side has a mid-19th century circular oast made of red brick laid in header bond, with some vitrified headers. It has a conical tiled roof and a wooden cowl, although the fantail was missing at the time of the survey. Inside the barn, there are gunstock jowled posts, a midrail, and curved tension braces. The roof features angled queen struts with diminishing rafters, lacking a ridgepiece and through purlins, along with curved windbraces, though not all are present.
