Description
The Old Cottage is a Grade II listed building dating from the first half of the 17th century. It is a timber-framed structure consisting of three short bays, with the right bay being slightly later in construction. There is a 20th-century extension attached to the building. The original part of the cottage is two storeys high and features three windows. The exterior is made of red brick, with segmental arches on the ground floor leading to simple leaded casements. The roof is half hipped and tiled, with a rebuilt chimney at one end. A modern gabled wing on the left is designed in the style of the early 17th century. At the back, there is a lean-to that likely dates from the late 17th century. Inside, the cottage has simple chamfered beams and plates, although most of the joists have been renewed and filled in. The roof structure consists of side purlins, and the overall scantlings are moderate. The cottage has been associated with the Tilyard family for over 200 years.
