Description
Wested Farm Barn, including the Chaff House, is a barn and chaff house located on Eynsford Road in Crockenhill. The barn dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, while the chaff house was added in the mid-18th century. The barn is an aisled timber structure, with its exterior clad in 20th-century brickwork laid in Sussex bond and topped by a steeply pitched corrugated asbestos roof. It features an L-shaped range with six by eight bays and two hipped wagon entrances.
Inside, the barn has various upright posts, mainly jowled with chamfered edges, and a typical 18th-century profile. The roof has angled queen struts with staggered purlins and original pegged rafters. The midstrey bay includes windbraces and curved windbraces connecting to the upright posts at the wall plate. The easternmost bays have a 20th-century inserted floor.
The Chaff House, a four-bay addition to the north, features through purlins, angled queen posts, and upright posts with cut profile jowls. It has pegged rafters without a ridgepiece and diagonal windbraces, with a 20th-century floor inserted without disturbing the structural elements.
