Description
The barn at 107 and 109 Westwood Road is a mid-18th century threshing barn, dated 1756 by a graffito, and was re-roofed in the 20th century.
It is timber-framed, built on a flint plinth, and clad in weather-boarding, with some sections tarred. The north wall features flint with yellow brick quoins. The barn has a half-hipped roof, which was likely originally thatched but is now covered with corrugated iron sheeting. The structure is an aisled barn with three bays and a central cart entrance.
On the exterior, the west side displays double wooden cart doors with iron hinges. Although the cart doors have been removed from the east side, it still retains old tarred weatherboarding. The north wall showcases flint with yellow brick quoins, a band between the floors, and a red brick window surround with a hinged plank opening. The upper part of the south side has been clad in corrugated iron.
Inside, the aisle posts are jowled with curved profiles and feature curved tension braces connecting to both tie beams and wallplates. These posts rest on brick and timber padstones that match the width of the aisles. One south aisle post and tie beam are rough hewn. Notably, one aisle post bears a graffito depicting a gabled building with the date 1756 (twice) and the initials H L. The wall frame has been covered in 20th-century sheeting, but some studs are still visible on at least three sides, along with a curved brace on the west side. The frame on the south side has been replaced in the 20th century, and the roof structure, including purlins, collar beams, and rafters, has also likely been replaced in the 20th century.
